How I Got Started

 

Speaking of pickups, here is a photo of the underside of one of them.

According to this web page, these humbucker pickups appear to be 1965 - 1967 late Patent No. humbucker from a varitone guitar. This web page specifically states: "had gold-plated pickups with one pickup having a reversed magnet." Which is in fact the case with these humbuckers. Specifically one magnet is in fact reversed.

 

Also here is a photo of the plastic pickup ring. From the photo, you can see that it's a type M-69.

Probably the reason they quit on this old guitar is that when they routed out the pickups, they made the openings too large, and didn't leave any wood underneath the corners of the pickups so they could be properly mounted to the guitar body. Not to mention that the pickups were badly mis-aligned with the guitar strings. So in order to properly align the pickups to the strings, I chiseled out each corner of the pickup openings and glued in a piece of wood.

Here is a photo of one of the pickup corners. For clarity, I circled the wood insert that I put in.
